Industrial Shot Blast Cleaning Units – ToolsRUs

Instead of relying on chemicals to clean metals and other hard surfaces, blast cleaning uses mechanical force. Cleaning units propel some type of abrasive material, known as media, at an object at very high speeds. The combination of high velocity and the abrasive media effectively cleans, deburrs or removes particulate material from the object. Shot blast cleaning units come in many types, from industrial-scale blasting machines to portable, handheld blast guns. Handheld blast guns are used at a job site to cleaning existing pipe, concrete, brick or metal objects. Self-contained blasting machines, on the other hand, are designed to hold a quantity of objects for cleaning, or may feature a conveyor belt that passes objects through the blasting area.

Tumble, table, cylinder and spinner/hanger blasters are the primary cleaning unit types. Each type basically serves the same purpose, although their designs vary widely. Shot blasters throw high-velocity particles at metal to clean or otherwise alter its exterior surface. Depending on the machine and the media, this process can be used to roughen, descale, deflash, deburr, texturize or even finish metal goods. In preparation for finishing, many fabricated components like certain auto parts are shot blasted to deburr them or remove welding residue. In other cases, blasters are used to remove surface contaminants like oil, rust or oxidation.

Custom-built shot blast cleaning units are designed with the intent of accommodating metal objects of a certain size and shape in varying quantities. Select units feature large compartments designed to hold a certain number of objects at once. Ideal for steel beams and sheet metal, conveyor blasters are another type which run the objects on a belt through the blasting area. Table blasters work best for low-volume cleaning, while spinner/hanger blasters work especially well for cleaning irregularly shaped parts.

Small metal particles are often used as the media or material that is blasted over objects at an extremely high velocity. Silicon carbide, steel grit, wire cuttings, aluminium oxide and metal shot are a few examples. Sand is another material used as blasting media. Media is selected based on the desired level of abrasion and the appropriateness to a given task.

There are numerous industrial shot blasting applications. The aircraft and automotive industries use shot blasting to clean up fabricated parts, to strengthen components and prepare them for finishing. Other products that may undergo shot blast cleaning include cast metal and cement items.
