Are You A Woodworking Amateur? Make Great Projects
Something made with wood can be made into different things. In some abodes, wood items are done and re-done to reply to a need. What used to be a divider can be cut and nailed together to make a shelf. The same shelf can later on be made into a box. This is what my younger brother does. He could be a mechanical engineer in his 40s. But he has not mastered the craft. He will not give it up too. He could always see another potential for wood particularly when it can answer another need. He completes his projects when he gets back home from work. He is generally a woodworking newb.
My first project was a picture frame. The second was a wooden box. I believe I never had any solo woodwork project after that. But. I like wood. Wood, they say, was one of the first materials worked by early humans apart from stone, mud and animal parts. Today, working on wood has turned into a popular hobby and a crucial industry. No wonder there are always beginners taking their chances.
I grew up with loads of the wooden pieces in our house produced and recreated into different things. These weren’t my projects though. They’re my brother’s. He has been doing woodwork since he was a teenager. And up to this time, he has not become a real expert in the craft. Yet, his keenness for it is always that of a woodworking newbie. He builds a divider into a shelf and later on transforms it into a box. He makes sure he has finished projects that he’s started. I believe he could truly benefit from some quality woodworking plans, be they shelf plans, shed plans or any other plan.
When my bro started his affair with wood in school, he only had what he says were beginner’s basic tools: a claw hammer, 6″ layout square, 25″ retracting tape measure, utility knife, nail sets and a coping saw. As his home projects increased, so did his box of tools and his confidence in the craft. He had extra stuff like chisels, level, screwdrivers, sliding bevel and a block plane. His collection of tools increased even more when he went to work in several nations . He went on to buy a circular saw. He says it is the most essential power tool. Then he got a power drill, a random orbital sander and a router. He is eyeing up a compound miter which is used to cut compound angles. To this day, he aspires to purchase a table saw – one of the expensive pieces a woodworking newb should have. But like the miter, it is not important to get it until one is more experienced in using electrical tools. The woodworking shop, they are saying, just isn’t complete without the table saw. Therefore he worked out he needs to have a wood shop first. He uses the garage when he does his projects.
My books require more shelves this time. However my younger bro isn’t home. I have wood and his toolchest though. Guess I must decide and become a woodworking newbie again.
